Setup was a breeze, I decided to try the NFC pairing and it worked immediately with no hassle. The construction of these headphones is wonderful,
the materials used all seem like the best of the best. I didn't even realize leather existed that is as soft as the ear cups on these. I was concerned that they would look enormous on my head but they are really a perfect size. These headphones are really comfortable in my opinion, I don't feel a lot of pressure or pinching against my head or ears. Wearing these headphones for several hours would not be a problem at all for me.
This is my first pair of headphones with noise cancellation, I put them on and could hear the ac running, ceiling fan spinning, traffic driving on the main road at the end of the block, and the refrigerator compressor running, turned the headphones on and BAM, absolute silence, I had to take them off for a second to make sure those sounds were actually still there. I did notice a slight pressure in my ear when the noise cancellation turned on, I had always heard that happens but it is very slight and after a minute or so I don't even notice it anymore. I have heard that some other headphones from Bose and Sony have superior noise cancellation but to me I can't really imagine needing or wanting more noise cancellation than provided by these HD1s, it's really remarkable.
The best part is the sound quality, I wouldn't consider myself to be a true audiophile by any means but I do play Violin and listen to music constantly and notice subtle differences in sound better than most I think. I took a second to mess with my phone to make sure it was using the aptX bluetooth audio codec (turns out my phone did this automatically when connecting to these headphones) to ensure the best possible quality and then started listening to a variety of music. I played a couple tracks from LED Zeppelin, Paganini, MGMT and Kavinski. All sounded really amazing, I could practically hear saliva bubbles in Robert Plants mouth popping as he took a breath between words in stairway to heaven. Bass is great without being over the top, highs were good but wont make you cringe or wince when they get way up there, the mids are really really wonderful, pretty much perfect. I haven't messed around with trying to create a custom EQ yet through the app, I'm told this is something that is possible, but almost don't even see the point. I'm stepping up from a thirty dollar pair of ear buds so if you already have good headphones you may not be as blown away by these as I was but for me the experience of listening to music through these headphones makes me want to go back and listen to every song I have ever listened to before to pick out more of the subtle differences that were simply not present in my old headphones. I even prefer the sound from these to my four piece Sonos speaker system in my living room but that's not really comparing apples to apples.
The only possible negative that may exist is that these headphones don't get super loud. I typically listen to my music slightly louder than most people I think and find the optimal volume on these to be about 75% maybe a hair more which is fine for me but some of my friends like to listen to very loud music, I think even at the highest volume these headphones might be a little less volume than they would like.
**update: I had read a few reviews complaining about bluetooth skipping out occasionally. The bluetooth connection works fine at work and around my house, just went and walked the dogs with the headphones and there were a few times that the music skipped a little, I have heard this has something to do with bluetooth needing surfaces to reflect its signal off of and in an open outdoor area sometimes there just aren't enough surfaces. I'm not sure if this is common to all bluetooth headsets and I read somewhere that it can be mitigated by putting your phone in an armband where it has a more direct line of sight to the headphones as opposed to your pocket. For me this was a pretty minor annoyance and usually I don't wear headphones when I'm outside because I like to hear what's going on around me but this may be something to consider if you plan on wearing them outdoors regularly.
Environment: I use these with my iPhone 6S. I commute by train (BART in San Francisco, CA) and wear them for roughly 30 minutes, twice a day, five days a week. I listen to a combination of talk/interview podcasts and music.
Reasons for buying: Entertainment and ambient noise cancellation/reduction are necessities for me on BART. I recently had both ear drums intubated and as a result suffered significant low frequency hearing loss. Simultaneiously, I'm much more sensitive to high frequency sounds. Ultimately, I wanted a set of headphones that would offer solid noise cancellation and quality sound reproduction.
Cliff Notes: These are awesome headphones. Noise cancellation is great. Audio quality is great. They're not too heavy, although they are a bit bulky when stuffing ina backpack (as expected). Battery life is outstanding. Given the limitations of the form factor, there are no real weaknesses here. However, if you're looking for a solution to answer and receive calls, the mic placement requires you to speak more loudly than normal...very uncomfortable in a public setting. Also worth noting that compressed audio delivered via Bluetooth will never satisfy an audiophile.
Details...the good: Sound quality is great. Noise cancellation is terrific. A+ on both counts, which alone validates the expense. These are very comfortable to wear, they seem to be quite well constructed, and they're plenty portable...as you factor in the over-the-ear design. There are on-ear models that cost less and fit better in small bags, but for me this side of that compromise was a no-brainer. If noise cancellation is more a necessity than a convenience for you, and if you cherish extracting as much of the audio experience as possible, I believe you'll be very happy.
Details....the bad: Very little to say here. If you really like to crank up the volume, you'll be disappointed when using these in wireless form. I read about this up front and was prepared for it - the impedance of the speakers is higher than in other sets, so you're limited. On a few occasions I have wished for a bit more oomph, but overall I run just shy of max volume. Note that this not an issue when wired. These really come to life when you feed them some power from an external pre-amp or even a tablet or computer with a bit more headroom. Otherwise, just keep in mind that using the headset for telephone conversations is a bit awkward since you need to speak up quite a bit for the mic to pick up your voice. And, if you're commuting/traveling, the size when folded is likely a bit bigger than you'd like. Again, these are really nit picks as both are quite obvious before you click to buy.
Conclusion: Expensive, but worth the money. If you can justify the expense, I think you'll be very happy. I'm ecstatic, especially so in regard to the noise cancellation functionality.
Top reviews from other countries
The bluetooth in my experience works best when you're inside and close to your music source. If I am further than 5 meters from my phone or laptop with my headphones, it will start to crackle. I hate being outside because my music is constantly stopping, starting or crackling. It's especially bad on the bus, to the point it hurts my ears. If I am outside I HAVE to use the wire.
I'm really unimpressed with the noise cancelling on these headphones. The feature is always on, tiring my ears, and doesn't do a very good job because I still hear most things (eg. wind coming from a window, my dog walking around) unless my music is on really loud... but then that's the same as every other headphone. I absolutely hate the fact that you can't turn it off with an app or setting and it's kind of ridiculous how this isn't already an option considering how expensive these headphones are.
The headphones also grip my head really tightly. I heard they knew this was a problem and have been loosening up the sides with each iteration, but it's still really uncomfortable to wear.
As I recounted all these problems while writing this review, I thought my rating of 3/5 was too high; I'm going to leave it as 3/5 because I don't hate these headphones. There are just a LOT of problems for the price.
Edit: Because of the price, I really tried to convince myself that I liked these headphones. They're stylish, but that's where the pros end. To reiterate the points above, the connectivity is TERRIBLE, the UI is poor, and the fit is very uncomfortable for anything over 1 hour. I don't think the sound is anything noteworthy because I've tried other headphones (specifically the bose qc35's) since buying this and I prefer those way more. I really really really regret buying these, and warn others not to buy it either.
The retro-type design is lovely. I wish others had such design. Its gorgeous. The materials are top notch. The ear pad is so good too!!
Mildly annoying was the fact that I couldn’t connect to two devices together. I know Bose and Sony can connect to multiple devices at once. I am usually working on my computer and phone and like the use of them both via my headphones.
What killed it for me though was the sound profile. Base is beautiful and feels premium. Very well executed. However I felt that that comes with a penalty on the mid and high ranges. I felt it sucking the soul from the songs I have historically enjoyed. This alone meant I had to return them.
I'm still looking for some wireless headphones, none of them has the same built quality as these. But they don't work well.
I purchased my HD1 on November 23rd, 2017, and returned them on December 18th, 2017. The product is well built. However, I had two major dissatisfaction with them:
1. Sometimes the sound gets choppy, and it won't stop until I turn it off and on again. And that's even when I'm right in front of the computer.
2. It keeps losing the connection, and that annoying voice keeps saying "lost connection" over and over again. When I turn off my computer without disconnecting it and try to listen to music on my phone, that voice will be telling me it lost the connection at least three times, I'd understand if it says it once, but three times?
I also had some other minor issues with them:
1. When I was trying to listen to something that is not loud enough, and I tried to increase the volume, there was a voice interrupting what I wanted to hear, and it said "volume max" loudly. I understand that it should provide some feedback, but a shorter and quieter one would be nice, especially when something is being played. Or even no feedback at all would be better than interrupting what I wanted to hear.
2. I was listening to music on one device, it kept saying "connected" and "lost connection" when I moved around my place, and my computer was in its spot. If I was connected to one device, and listening from it, why should I care if it's connected or not to another device?
I would consider purchasing a newer version of these headphones, if they fix the software and connectivity problems.
They may be the best wireless headphone on the market, but the sound quality is still subpar with wired ones. I tried with different kinds of audio files, from regular streaming services (Apple, Spotify) to high quality one (Tidal) and ripped CDs. I tried with or without the cable. The mids are muddy. The bass is exaggerated. These are in no way neutral cans. It may be caused by the noise cancellation which tou can't turn off. They play a bit better at high volume.
After trying several wireless headphones, I think that you still can't achieve audiophiles sound with wireless headphones. I have wired ones that perform a lot better for a fraction of that price. I returned them and I'll keep waiting for a real audiophile wireless solution.
